Day Sixty-Four: Sleeping All The Time

Hey, team, is anyone else still exhausted all the time? I seem to remember previous teams talking about their crazy energy, and how they feel so good, etc. My experience is more exhaustion, including sometimes extreme sleepiness after lunch. And the weekends--wow. I've taken hours-long naps two days in a row, from which it's nearly impossible to wake. Anyone else?

Other than that, I've got a vacation coming up starting Thursday to enjoy and stress over. I think I'll pack complete breakfasts for all four days. I know I can get yogurt, milk, fruit there. Should I pack lunches and dinners as well? Maybe just half lunches and dinners? (The hotels will have fridges, but we might spend hours in transit a couple of days in a row). Or should I take a chance that the hotels/restaurants can provide appropriate food? It's an area that's used to Western tourists and my dinners this week have gone back to protein and veg, so I'm inclined to take the chance.

Those of you who have traveled, especially in China, what did you do?

  1. It's a challenge to find good food on the road. Pack what you can and do your best with the rest!

  2. If you have the time for extra sleep, then sleep! I bet there's some serious muscle building going on...and that the energy will return at some point.

Enjoy your vacation! I find it to be a fun challenge to sniff out PCP food on the road. But it's always good to bring as much as you can, esp if you have a fridge!

  3. I wouldn't hold up my china trip as an example, but i found breakfast to be the easiest (buffet) - i stick to the veggies and fish at the other meals as much as possible, but watch out for the msg. And definitely stay away from the Baijiu!

  4. I seem to have energy during the day, but that's nothing new for me personally. I'm definitely way more tired at night than I used to be. I could sleep forever if I could on the weekends.

  5. I didn't have crazy energy. Of course, I rarely got the requisite eight so maybe i'm not the best person to comment :P I just felt less sleepy/tired than I normally would've had I been eating crap. SLEEP is a wonderful thing. Get it where you can!

Packing and prepping food is a ROYAL pain in the butt. gonna have to offer a competing opinion to miss sarah. I bet you'd be fine not packing stuff as long as you bring the scale. I lack the self control/discipline you have and was afraid that in a bout of hunger, I'd reach for whatever crap was easiest and available. Where are you going and what's on the vacation agenda? I packed stuff for NY and Boston cause I knew I wouldn't have time to find a mkt or look for pcp compliant foods while playing. For CA when I went to visit the folks, I didn't pack anything cause I knew where I'd be able to get food.

  7. Pack what can but more importantly, when you have to eat out, don't be afraid to be a pain in the ass to the waiter/chef. Just tell them! No salt, no oil, etc. It won't be perfect, but as a paying customer you have the right to ask. It took me a while to get over my embarrassment at doing this, now I don't care!

  8. Thanks, all. I'm heading to Guilin and Yangshuo in China (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yangshuo_County), where we plan to be outdoorsy. I think the hotel will be accommodating with food, so that's good. My Chinese teacher also taught me how to say: just chicken, fish, vegetables, no oil, no salt. We'll see how it goes.

N--you must be smoking something, because I can't see any difference in the pictures from 20 days apart. But I'll take it. Maybe I'm just blinkered by the fat that remains. Can you believe we're done in just three weeks?
